The Lost Zone mechanic comes back every couple of generations to Standard. Its latest appearance, in Lost Origin, gave rise to a variety of archetypes collectively known as Lost Box, which focuses on sending a certain amount of cards to the Lost Zone (using specific enablers such as Colress's Experiment
) in order to activate powerful effects, most notably Mirage Gate
.
In Expanded, filling the Lost Zone is easier than it ever was, thanks to older cards that interact with the Lost Zone, especially Prism Star cards, that go to the Lost Zone instead of the discard pile. This makes Battle Compressor Team Flare Gear
a powerful Lost Zone activator, sending three cards to the Lost Zone. Using Mirage Gate on turn 1 is fairly common. But that engine is weak to disruption, and the payoff is not as strong as what other decks can do, relegating Lost Box to the realm of fun decks to show off the format, but with few competitive aspirations. At least, until new Lost Zone cards are printed?
