Calyrex Shadow Rider Shadow Rider Tier 1 VMAX Toolbox Handlock Iconic

Shadow Rider Calyrex VMAXShadow Rider Calyrex VMAX began its life as an aggressive deck trying to stack as many Psychic Energy as possible to OHKO any opponent. However, as more powerful decks like LugiaArcheops Lugia and Regidrago Regidrago started appearing, which would win the Prize race with their faster and more devastating attacks, this game plan became unsustainable. Instead, Shadow Rider started relying on more disruptive strategies, using Shadow Rider Calyrex VShadow Rider Calyrex V's Shadow Mist, ChimechoChimecho's Bell of Silence or, more recently, FrillishFrillish's Oceanic Gloom to buy time while setting up its board.

Shadow Rider's most classic trick nowadays is to use Unfair StampUnfair Stamp when the opponent takes a KO, followed by Trevenant & Dusknoir GXTrevenant & Dusknoir GX's Night Watch to remove the opponent's entire hand. It can even combine this play with Temple of SinnohTemple of Sinnoh to make it even harder for the opponent to respond. It then keeps using Night Watch, unless it's possible to win the Prize race by attacking with more direct attacks such as Lillie's Clefairy exLillie's Clefairy ex's Fairy Rondo.

Obviously, Shadow Rider must be compared to Gardevoir Gardevoir: both benefit from the excellent combination of Fog CrystalFog Crystal and Mysterious TreasureMysterious Treasure, and both accumulate Psychic Energy in play to make use of various attackers. Of the two, Gardevoir has the strongest late game, but Shadow Rider has an easier time establishing a board and doesn't particularly fear KyuremKyurem's Trifrost.

There are multiple Shadow Rider variants, with the main point of contention being whether or not to include Jellicent exJellicent ex as a stronger disruptive attack in the midgame and backup plan against Regidrago. Some players also experiment with Telepathic Psychic EnergyTelepathic Psychic Energy, which is an excellent turn 1 play but also can't be attached with Underworld Door and has anti-synergy with Temple of SinnohTemple of Sinnoh.

Recently, Shadow Rider surprised the world by winning Champions League Aichi 2026, with a build using Radiant EternatusRadiant Eternatus, a card that had been dismissed from the deck for a long time, alongside some original ideas. It remains to be seen whether this choice was the dawn of a new era for Shadow Rider or simply an excellent metacall, but it's clear that this deck is still alive and kicking.
